GW retained Karchem Properties to assist in planning and managing the adaptive use and rehabilitation of two pre-Civil War era row houses for use as the George Washington University's club. The facility includes dining and meeting facilities operated by Club Corp. Karchem directed the base building architect, the interior architect, and the general contractor.
The project's greatest challenge was how to fit a multifaceted, modern program into small-scale residential buildings. The program called for installation of dumbwaiters, elevators, and parallel communications systems for GW and Dallas-based Club Corp.
Karchem Properties and the project team gave special consideration to redeveloping the two, pre-Civil War row houses once known as the Lawson Whitney House. The club provides a historic setting for the University's permanent collection of art and antique furnishings, including items that once belonged to President Ulysses S. Grant.
